P & G and Burt (Sorry Ernie)

This turn-of-the-century copy of P&G was published by A. L. Burt (New York) who primarily published reprints. Based on the cover, this appears to be part of their "Little Women Series" which boasted a "uniform binding" which would make them more attractive together on a shelf. The back pages include 10 pages of advertising of other books, showing the selling price of these books as 75 cents. Not bad for a hard cover! (There is also a Little Men Series of books).

This book includes the Arthur Hughes illustrations, but also has a very nice frontpiece which I've uploaded along with the cover. The caption under the drawing is "Curdie discovers the hall of the Goblin Palace". There is an artist name in the bottom right corner, but I can't figure out what it is. The letters appear to be: "PSTHERICK." Perhaps Barbara recognizes it.

A.L. Burt started publishing in 1890 and were sold to another company in 1937.
